I've installed most of the frameless cabinet lines available to Connecticut dealers over the past eight years. Some are excellent. Some look great in a showroom and create headaches on the job site. Fabuwood's Catalina collection, specifically the Illume line within it, keeps coming back to the top of my recommendation list for clients who want a full-slab frameless look without paying custom cabinet prices.
What the Catalina Illume Line Actually Is
The Catalina collection is Fabuwood's premium frameless offering. The Illume designation refers to the high-gloss and matte lacquer finishes within the Catalina line. These are full-overlay frameless boxes with 3/4-inch all-plywood construction, soft-close Blum hinges, and dovetail drawer joints. The door fronts are available in finishes from high-gloss lacquer to textured matte. The slab profile means there is no raised panel, no shaker rail, just a flat door front that runs edge to edge.
Fact
Fabuwood Catalina carries KCMA certification and CARB Phase 2 compliance. All-plywood box construction. Blum soft-close hinges and drawer slides are standard, not an upgrade.
The Color Options I Actually Specify
Fabuwood offers Catalina in a wide range of finishes, but I specify a smaller group repeatedly for Connecticut projects. Here is my honest read on each.
Bianco Gloss
Bianco Gloss is a high-sheen white that reads very clean and contemporary. It's the most popular finish in the line for clients who want a bright, reflective kitchen. The gloss surface amplifies light, which works well in smaller or north-facing kitchens. The tradeoff: fingerprints show, and you need to wipe it down frequently.

Grigio Gloss
Grigio Gloss is a medium gray in the same high-sheen finish. It has a warmer undertone than some grays on the market and pairs particularly well with white quartz or light quartzite countertops. This is our bestselling Catalina finish at the Bridgeport showroom.

Carbon Matte
Carbon Matte is a near-black in a matte lacquer finish. It is striking as a full-kitchen treatment and sophisticated as a two-tone lower cabinet paired with white uppers. The matte surface hides fingerprints and minor scuffs far better than a gloss finish, which makes it more practical for active families. Clients in Westport and Greenwich have made Carbon Matte the most-requested dark finish we carry.
Como Ash
Como Ash is a textured wood-grain laminate finish in a gray-ash tone. It brings warmth without going traditional. I've used Como Ash on islands and lower cabinets against white perimeter boxes, and the combination has a natural, considered feel that clients consistently respond well to.
Fabuwood Catalina: my honest read
Pros
- All-plywood box with Blum hardware standard
- Boxes ship square and flat, easy to install
- Fast replacement turnaround when something is damaged
- Limited lifetime warranty on the box, 5-year on finish and hardware
- Wide finish range, gloss to matte to wood-grain
Cons
- Not suited for traditional or shaker-style kitchens
- Gloss finishes show fingerprints, daily wipe-down required
- Lead time can extend during peak season (June through August)
Job Site Experience in Connecticut
The reason I keep recommending Catalina is not just the finished look. It is how the cabinets behave during installation. The boxes ship square and flat. The Blum hinge system is reliable and the adjustment range is wide enough to handle typical wall irregularities in older Connecticut homes. I've installed Catalina in new construction in Stamford and in 1960s colonials in Fairfield where nothing was plumb, and the product accommodated both without drama.
Where Catalina Is Not the Right Choice
If a client has a traditional home and wants raised-panel doors, shaker profiles, or painted beadboard, Catalina is not the right line. It's a contemporary frameless product and it reads that way. If the design direction is transitional or classic, I'll point them toward Fabuwood Galaxy or Imperio instead.
